Mexico: A renewables powerhouse

Last Tuesday, February 13, Saypower held its “Mexico: A Renewables Powerhouse” event, featuring speakers such as Ana Sainas (first secretary of ProMéxico), Guillermo Zúñiga (National Commissioner with Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE)), Máximo Martín (G-advisory partner) and Josep Montañés (Director of Project Finance at Banco Sabadell).

Following the CRE’s detailed commentary on the state of Mexico’s electricity market, G-advisory shared its view of the different ways to configure electricity sales in the country, focusing on the results and examples of the three main alternatives: long-term auctions, private contracts and spot markets. In its talk, Garrigues identified the viable options renewable energy producers of any size have for selling electricity, clean energy certificates and power.

The event brought together numerous Spanish managers of Mexican companies and business areas, which underscores the solid ties between the two countries in the area of renewable energies. Going forward, the sector will need a solid understanding of electricity markets, given that renewables companies will increasingly compete in this area on equal footing with other technologies.
